Are You Eating Enough While Taking a GLP-1 Medication?

GLP-1 medications can reduce hunger and food intake. For some people, the change is substantial enough that eating regular, nourishing meals becomes difficult.

Weight loss is not the only measure of health. Adequate energy, protein, fluids, and micronutrients remain important throughout treatment.

Signs Your Intake May Need Attention

Possible warning signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue or weakness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Difficulty completing everyday activities
  • Consistently struggling to eat meals
  • Unintentional loss of strength
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting that interferes with intake

These symptoms can have several causes, so they do not automatically mean you are undereating.

What Can Help?

Try planning smaller meals, including protein regularly, keeping convenient foods available, and drinking fluids throughout the day.

A dietitian can help assess your food intake and identify practical changes. Your clinician can evaluate symptoms, medications, and whether laboratory testing is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical attention if you cannot keep fluids down, have fainting, or develop severe or persistent abdominal pain.

The Bottom Line

You should not have to choose between weight management and adequate nourishment. If your appetite has decreased so much that eating feels difficult, talk with your healthcare team.
